How the maths works
Tiles per square metre is 1,000,000 divided by the tile's width times height in millimetres. We multiply your area by your wastage allowance first, because cuts, breakages and pattern offcuts are real, and a top-up order from a different dye batch rarely matches. Grout follows the standard joint-volume formula (tile perimeter over face area, times tile thickness, joint width and grout density), and adhesive is banded at 3.5 kg/m² for walls and 5 kg/m² for floors.

A tile count is half the answer. How many tiles do I need per square metre?
Divide 1,000,000 by your tile's width × height in millimetres. A 600×600mm tile covers 0.36 m², so you need 2.78 tiles per m². Always add wastage on top: 10% for a straight lay, 15% for brick bond or small rooms, 20% for herringbone or diagonal patterns.
How much wastage should I allow for tiling?
10% is the Australian standard for a straight lay in a normal room. Go to 15% for brick bond, small or awkward rooms with lots of cuts, and 20% for herringbone, chevron or diagonal lays. Ordering wastage up front matters because dye batches vary: a top-up order months later may not match.
How much grout do I need per square metre?
Grout use depends on tile size, tile thickness and joint width: (tile width + height) ÷ (width × height) × thickness × joint width × 1.6 gives kilograms per square metre. Large 600×600 tiles with a 3mm joint use roughly 0.25 kg/m²; small subway tiles with wide joints can use four times that.
How much tile adhesive do I need?
Allow about 3.5 kg/m² on walls with a 6mm notched trowel and about 5 kg/m² on floors with a 10mm notch. A 20kg bag covers roughly 4-6 m² of floor or 5-7 m² of wall.
